Freelancing happened quite synchronistically for me, but that’s a different story for another day.

PS: I first started on Fiverr and don’t have a great opinion of that platfrom

Hence, I moved on to Upwork for a few reasons

  1. More quality work
  2. Better clients
  3. Capability to leverage and build an agency quicker
  4. Better management for freelancers

Now on to the grind!

Here’s my step by step guide to getting your “First Client” on Upwork

  1. Find a skill — anything that you think you’re great at from writing, translating, editing to anything really

Best way is to pick 5, analysis the market, check long term, narrow further, get opinion of your friends or do some free work

whichever you add value in + enjoy (pick those 2)

2. Complete your profile to a 100%

3. Update your profile from the perspective of a client

If you have no clue, reference your competitors to get an idea.

Then leverage and tailor on your own

(I’ve linked mine at the bottom)

4. Add portfolios

Add some extra work you’ve done on the side, run a dummy audit and add as an portfolio (this showcases your work)

DON’T KEEP THIS SPACE EMPTY

5. Apply for jobs with low connects + least applications

This way your chances get higher and once you finish the project you get a review which arguments your prospects for the next one

6. Leverage your newness on the platform for giving clients cheaper work for review (for a job well done ofcourse)

7. Be persistent

I got my first client within 30 days and the next client after 3 months

It’s taken a few misses, learnings and more

8. Make your proposals personal and relatable to the client

I mentioned to a wellness brand that i’m a wellness enthusiast and practice so and so they hired my instantly!

The client is human and is looking for someone that is a expert, human and fun to work with!

9. Go out and network

If you can’t physically then online, I got my 3rd client by actually meeting them face to face and suggesting a project via upwork.

10. Learn from free resources such as these

I spend atleast 20 hours learning how Upwork works, it takes dedication, time and effort.

I don’t know how long I’ll stay on this platform but follow along for tips on freelancing, entrepreneurship, spiritual well being and more

because I’ve got a life to share ;)
